Späldeel Music Ensemble
ABOUT:
PTF’s musicians, known as “Späldeel,” make up an elite amateur music ensemble that practices and performs at a variety of events and festivals throughout the year.
EXPECTATIONS:
PTF welcomes many kinds of musicians, with our band historically including vocals, accordion, guitar, violin, mandolin, string bass, flute, clarinet, and harmonica. We do not provide individual instrument or vocal lessons and expect musicians to learn new music and sing/play with moderate proficiency. We ask musicians to attend dance and music practices regularly once they are ready to play with the group, working to become performance-ready. The music director will have the final say as to when or whether a musician will be ready to perform. Please notify the music director as far in advance as possible if you need to miss a rehearsal or are unable to commit to an upcoming performance.
REHEARSALS:
Musicians should plan to attend dance practice on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 - 9:00, where you will play music and build your repertoire in real time alongside our dancers. Music stands and stools are provided. After practice, members often stay for a social hour, and while it is completely optional, joining in is another great way to get to know other members! Musicians-only practices are scheduled on an as-needed basis, typically in the weeks before standalone performances that do not feature our dancers.
COST:
Späldeel membership dues are $65 per year, with a one-time tracht (outfit) deposit of $100 that is collected when you are ready to perform with the group and receive your custom-fitted tracht.
HOW TO JOIN:
We invite you to try out a practice at no cost, after which, we can answer any questions you might have and discuss next steps if you would like to move forward with membership. Additionally, we can provide you with sheet music or music recordings if you would like to practice at home before continuing to play with the group. Please contact our Späldeel music director, George Radtke, at music@ptfusa.org to express your interest and find a date to attend your first practice. We look forward to meeting you!
